Hood and Ansul

Kitchen hood and Ansul inspection schedule

Miss the hood cleaning or the Ansul date, and the shop that is not in the binder does not get the call.

Open a free ledger

Put the next hood and Ansul date on the free ledger. The shop still sets it.

What the system is

A kitchen hood wet-chemical system is the suppression gear over the cook line. Shops call it an Ansul system. It sits in the hood and is there for a grease fire. It is not the exhaust fan, and it is not the cleaning of the hood itself.

How often

NFPA 96 hood-cleaning frequency depends on how much the kitchen cooks. NFPA 17A wet-chemical inspection is often twice a year. You set the rebook date. Suggested start on the ledger: 6 months, then the shop writes the date.

Twice a year is the rhythm many shops start from for the wet-chemical inspection. Hood cleaning can land on a different month, because it depends on how much that kitchen cooks. This page does not turn that volume into a number of months. The shop writes both dates. Those notes are not a code determination.

Records to keep

  • The last hood-cleaning report.
  • The last wet-chemical service report.
  • The tag on the system, if the kitchen has one.
  • The next due date the shop set for each visit.
  • The shop name and the phone that should get the rebook call.
  • Any deficiency or repair list the kitchen already has.

Keep those with the building binder. This site does not set a retention period. The reports stay on paper. The ledger only keeps the next due date.

When the shop gets the call

A sticker on the hood does not dial anyone. A missed hood or Ansul date is the liability the building is left holding, and the next company in the kitchen gets the work. When the next service window opens, the shop named in the binder is the one that should get the call.

The free ledger sorts overdue, 7, 14, 30, and 60 days and drafts a plain-text note in the shop’s name. It does not send email. Leave the inspection-day sheet on the visit, and the handoff sheet when the manager changes, so the next contact still has that phone number.

Leave it in the binder

Questions

Is 6 months the code interval?

No. That number is only the ledger's suggested start. NFPA 96 hood-cleaning frequency depends on how much the kitchen cooks. NFPA 17A wet-chemical inspection is often twice a year. You set the rebook date.

Does hood cleaning replace the Ansul inspection?

No. Cleaning the hood and inspecting the wet-chemical system are different jobs. The shop sets each date.

Does the ledger email the kitchen?

A free ledger drafts a plain-text note on this device. It does not send email.
